How a Fluffy Bear Mascot Made Our Preschool a Top Choice for Kids

The School with the Fluffy Bear!

Recently, New Covenant Preschool was deemed the VPK option of choice by a four-year-old who had toured various preschools with her family. When the tours were over, she insisted she had to go to "the school with the Fluffy Bear!”

The bear she is referring to is our beloved mascot, “Barnabas.”

Our Mascot Helped Us Stand Out

I am pleased that New Covenant Preschool's mascot helped us to stand out among other schools in this child’s eyes, though this is not Barnabas’s main job.  Barnabas was introduced to welcome kids and provide familiarity.

Not a Class Mascot, a School Mascot

Throughout my career, I’ve used mascots. I used Alvin, the famous chipmunk, as our class mascot when I was the teacher in a classroom ironically named “The Chipmunks.”

Barnabas, however, is not a class mascot; he is the school’s mascot. He is as unique a mascot as New Covenant Preschool is a preschool.

A Mascot’s Role

Barnabas’s role became more than an object to help children feel more comfortable. Barnabas is the host of our Bible Time, adding an element of fun and enthusiasm to our Chapel Time.

Recognizable Familiarity

Barnabas is always ready to ask thought-provoking questions, offer words of encouragement, and celebrate the excitement of Bible stories. It is with Barnabas’s help that we inspire kindness and compassion at New Covenant Preschool.

Whether being tossed in the air during parachute play or taking on the role of “the bear” during our bear hunt, Barnabas helps children to become excited about our programs and provides a recognizable familiarity.

Instant Recognition

Barnabas is part of our logo, and along with his signature tie, he wears many hats – literally. Barnabas dons a saucepan while playing Johnny Appleseed and a stocking cap when we pretend to skate.

He may not have a charismatic English accent like the Geico gecko; in fact, not many hear his voice. Barnabas only talks to the teachers.

However, even without a voice, Barnabas provides instant recognition, or for some 4-year-olds, just enough recognition to know they want to go to “the Fluffy Bear school.”
