Christ’s Kingship: Beyond the Church Walls
Fr. Christopher centers on the celebration of Christ the King Sunday, emphasizing that Christ’s reign is not limited to the church or religious moments but extends to every aspect of life, including its messiness and pain. Fr. Christopher draws from Luke 23, paralleling the congregation’s experiences with those of Christ during His crucifixion. Even in suffering and humiliation, Jesus offers hope and paradise to others, demonstrating how faith can transform pain into promise.
Quoting George MacLeod, Fr. Christopher reminds the congregation that Jesus was crucified not in a cathedral, but “on a cross between two thieves, on a town garbage heap.” Christ’s kingship is universal, encompassing all the places and moments we might otherwise deem unworthy or shameful. This radical inclusivity means that no part of our lives is beyond the reach of Christ’s love and redemption.
Providence and Progress: Two Sides of Christian Life
The sermon explores two perspectives in Christian life:
- Providence: Trusting God’s faithfulness and goodness, even when circumstances are difficult.
- Progress: Believing in God’s promises to lead His people to better places and new beginnings.
Both perspectives are united in Christ’s kingship. Whether we find ourselves waiting patiently in the rain or longing for God to intervene and bring us to a “land of milk and honey,” we are invited to trust in Christ’s sovereignty and goodness.
Real-Life Application: Bringing Our Struggles to Christ
Fr. Christopher does not shy away from the realities of life. He acknowledges the pain, loss, and uncertainty that many in the congregation have faced over the past year. From anxiety and homelessness to grief and regret, these struggles are named and honored. The invitation is clear: bring your whole self to Christ, who reigns over every aspect of life. In His presence, even the most dissonant moments can become music.
Invitation to Deeper Relationship
As the year ends, the sermon invites listeners to spend time with Christ, reflect on their journey, and consider inviting Jesus to be King in their lives. Whether this year felt like the best concert or the hardest season, King Jesus can make harmony out of discord and offer grace for every step ahead. The message is one of hope, renewal, and community support—recognizing shared struggles and the importance of supporting one another.
Conclusion: Christ the King Is a Good King
Fr. Christopher closes with a reminder of God’s grace and faithfulness. Looking around the sanctuary, he notes the resilience and perseverance of the congregation, celebrating the ways in which God has preserved and blessed them. Christ is the King—not just of the church, but of every moment, every struggle, and every joy. His reign brings hope, healing, and new beginnings to all who invite Him into their lives.
