Listen to the sermon now. "Between Mountains" - Fr. Christopher Caudle

Summary

Fr. Christopher Caudle's sermon focuses on persevering prayer as a central means of grace, illustrated through two pivotal moments in Jesus’ life: the Mount of Transfiguration and the Garden of Gethsemane.

He opens with a prophetic word to the congregation, offering hope for a future season of peace while warning against complacency. The church is urged to deepen its grounding in Scripture and prayer, recognizing that strength will be needed to face future challenges, and to affirm God’s faithfulness and victory in Christ.

On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus prays and is revealed in visible glory—His face shining, His clothes radiant, accompanied by Moses and Elijah. This moment represents times when prayer is answered powerfully and visibly, which the preacher connects to believers’ own experiences of “glory prayers,” when God responds clearly and miraculously.

The sermon then contrasts this with the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus again prays, this time in deep agony rather than in glory. Here, Jesus submits to the Father’s will despite suffering, showing that hardship and struggle can also be part of God’s purposes. Persevering prayer in these moments is about faithfulness and endurance, not escape.

A key theme is that both mountains are essential to understanding Jesus. The disciples are instructed not to speak of the glory until they have witnessed the suffering, emphasizing that Christ’s saving work includes both triumph and sacrifice. In both settings, Jesus is strengthened—once by God’s manifest glory and once by angelic support.

Importantly, Jesus does not remain on either mountain. He always comes down to serve and save, whether freeing a suffering child or submitting to arrest and the cross. Prayers, therefore, equips believers to re-enter the world in obedience and mission rather than retreat from it.

Fr. Christopher concludes by encouraging those living “between the mountains”—holding onto memories of answered prayers while continuing to pray through long, unresolved struggles. Perseverance in prayer is affirmed as faithful discipleship, with the assurance that Jesus, who prayed through both glory and suffering, continues to pray for His people today.
