Listen to the sermon now "Come and Behold Him" - Fr. Christopher Caudle
Summary of the Christmas Eve Sermon
Fr. Christopher’s sermon centers on the significance of Christmas as the foundational feast for all other Christian celebrations, emphasizing the birth of Christ as the source from which events like Theophany, Passover, Ascension, and Pentecost flow. Drawing from the Gospel of Luke and the reflections of early church fathers, he highlights how the announcement of Jesus’ birth was first made to shepherds—figures who symbolize those tasked with “holding everything together” in life, whether in families, workplaces, or communities.
The shepherds are portrayed as standing between heaven and earth, responsible for both the vulnerable sheep and for the well-being of those in their care. The sermon uses relatable modern examples—teachers, UPS workers, ICU nurses, caseworkers, and even grocery store cart attendants—to illustrate the burdens and responsibilities of those who keep things running smoothly.
The core message is that Christmas is especially “good news” for people who feel the weight of responsibility. The angels’ proclamation to the shepherds introduces three titles for Jesus: Savior, Messiah, and Lord. Each title is unpacked:
- Savior: Contrasted with worldly saviors like Caesar Augustus, Jesus brings lasting salvation not through force, but through humility.
- Messiah: Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises, a sign that God does not abandon what He has begun.
- Lord: Jesus’ lordship offers a new center for our lives, distinct from worldly power, and assures us of God’s faithfulness.
The sign given to the shepherds—a baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger—underscores the humility and accessibility of Christ. The angelic choir’s message is directed not at the manger, but at the shepherds, reinforcing that the comfort and confidence of Christmas are for those who bear responsibility.
The sermon concludes by encouraging listeners, especially those feeling overwhelmed by their duties, to lay their burdens before Christ. The Christ child, who holds all things together, invites everyone to find rest and guidance in Him, whether they need rescue, fulfillment, or direction.
