Hear the sermon now, "Jesus Prayer Request" - Fr. Christopher Caudle

Summary of Fr. Christopher’s sermon

Fr. Christopher preached from Matthew 9:35–10:8, focusing on Jesus’ prayer request: “Ask the Lord of the harvest…to send out workers into his harvest field.” The central message was that the mission of the church moves at the pace of the generosity of God’s people—not only generosity with money, but also with time, obedience, compassion, and persistent prayer.

He explained that Jesus looked at the crowds with compassion because they were “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” After demonstrating His authority through many miracles in Matthew 8–9, Jesus identified the deeper need: the harvest was plentiful, but there were too few workers. Rather than asking His disciples to pray for a harvest, Jesus asked them to pray for more laborers—people willing to step into God’s mission.

Fr. Christopher emphasized that when the disciples prayed, they discovered they were part of the answer. Jesus sent them out with His authority and His message: the kingdom of God has come near. The sermon challenged the church to see the world as Jesus sees it—with compassion, hope, and a willingness to serve. We may not be ready to serve everywhere or everyone at once, but we can begin where God has placed us and where compassion is already stirring in our hearts.

The sermon closed with a call to pray Jesus’ own prayer: “Lord of the harvest, send out laborers.” As the church prays, gives, serves, and steps forward, it participates in God’s mission to bring healing, hope, and shepherding care to a world in need.
