Summary
Fr. Christopher reflects on the period between Palm Sunday and the following Sunday, urging listeners to consider the significance of witnessing during this time. He begins by discussing the rapid passage of time and how it can sometimes feel slow or fast, drawing a parallel to the week following Easter Sunday as described in the Gospel of John, chapter 20. This passage begins with the disciples gathered fearfully behind locked doors, only to be visited by Jesus, who offers them peace, shows them his wounds, and brings them great joy.
Fr. Christopher emphasizes that Jesus' message of peace and forgiveness is central, as he reassures his disciples despite their past failures. He recommissions them, sending them out to continue his mission with the breath of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Christopher highlights that this recommissioning occurs after the disciples' failures, signifying a new beginning empowered by the resurrection.
The narrative shifts to Thomas, one of the disciples who was absent at Jesus' initial appearance. Thomas, upon hearing of Jesus' visit, expresses doubt and sets conditions for his belief. Fr. Christopher uses Thomas's story to illustrate the importance of allowing people to ask questions and express doubts. The disciples do not dismiss Thomas; instead, they invite him to join them again, demonstrating patience and openness.
A week later, Jesus appears to Thomas, addressing his doubts directly and leading Thomas to a profound declaration of faith. Fr. Christopher highlights the role of Christians as witnesses, akin to courtroom witnesses who share what they have seen and understood rather than acting as lawyers or judges. He underscores the need for Christians to maintain the dignity and freedom of those who question faith, allowing Jesus to reach out to them in his own way. The disciples' approach to Thomas serves as a model for engaging with those who have questions about faith, focusing on inviting them into the presence of the living Christ rather than coercing belief.
Fr. Christopher recounts a personal story of an individual named Lucky who recently decided to become a Christian. This story illustrates the power of witnessing and the transformative presence of the risen Christ. He emphasizes that a Christian's role is to be a witness to Jesus' ongoing presence and work in the world. Furthermore, he encourages listeners to reflect on their own experiences and how the risen Christ has transformed their lives. By revisiting past moments through the lens of resurrection, believers can gain new understanding and joy. He urges the congregation to be open to sharing their stories and to trust in Jesus' ability to speak peace and joy into others' lives.
Fr. Christopher calls on the congregation to actively participate in witnessing during the Easter season. It emphasizes the importance of being a welcoming and trustworthy presence to those exploring faith, and encourages believers to maintain confidence in Jesus' ability to transform lives. He ends with a prayer for those who have walked away from faith and for those who are beginning their journey, asking for guidance and strength to be effective witnesses of Christ's love and peace.
