Key Points of Sermon

Belief and Relationship:

Beliefs are meant to build community and express love, grounded in God’s character for stability. The first clause of the Creed (“We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, of all that is, seen and unseen”) is rooted in Jesus Christ and reveals God’s relational nature.

God’s Uniqueness:

The Creed distinguishes the one God from the many gods of the ancient world and from atheism, emphasizing God’s personal and absolute nature.

Three Descriptors of God:

  • Father: Not just a metaphor, but a relationship made possible through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Almighty: God is all-powerful and capable, especially in saving and redeeming people.
  • Creator: God made everything, both visible and invisible, giving the universe purpose and design.

Challenges and Questions:

Fr. Christopher acknowledges common doubts: If the universe is relational, why is there conflict? If God is capable, why is there evil? If creation is purposeful, why does life feel chaotic? The Creed’s answers are not to minimize God’s claims but to point to Jesus Christ as the solution to these questions.

Scriptural References:

Fr. Christopher draws on passages like Hebrews 11:3, Psalm 104, Genesis 1-2, and Job 38-42 to illustrate God’s creative power and purpose.

Confession and Witness:

The act of confessing the Creed is both a declaration to God and a witness to others and spiritual powers, affirming hope in God revealed by Jesus Christ.

Invitation:

Fr. Christopher closes by inviting listeners to answer the question, “Who do you say that Jesus Christ is?” and to enter into a relationship with God through Christ.

He emphasizes that Christian belief is fundamentally relational, rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ, and that the Nicene Creed articulates a faith in one God who is Father, Almighty, and Creator. He encourages the congregation to hold fast to these truths, especially when faced with life’s most challenging questions, and to find hope and purpose in God’s character and promises.
