Hear the sermon now, "The Prophet's Plow" - Fr. Nathan Bryant

In this sermon segment, Fr. Nathan Bryant introduces a series titled "The Prophet's Plow," focusing on the book of Jeremiah. He explores how Jeremiah's message was intended to help the people of Judah realize they were asking the wrong questions in a time of spiritual drifting.

Key themes and takeaways:

The Context of Jeremiah's Ministry: Jeremiah ministered during one of the darkest periods in Judah's history, marked by failing leadership (specifically the long reign of *King Manasseh*) and a disconnect between outward religious practice and inward heart condition.

The Commissioning Message: God commissioned Jeremiah with a two-part mission: to "uproot and tear down" what is false, and then to "build and plant" what is true. Fr. Bryant emphasizes that this destruction is not the end goal, but a necessary step for redemption.

The Two Great Evils: Fr. Bryant highlights the passage in Jeremiah 2:13, where God accuses his people of committing two evils: forsaking Him, the "fountain of living waters," and hewing out "broken cisterns" that can hold no water. He explains that these cisterns represent the idols (money, success, control, pleasure) we trust in that inevitably fail to satisfy.

The Nature of Sin and Idolatry: The sermon describes sin not as a harmless mistake, but as a dangerous substitute for God. Fr. Bryant notes that we become like what we worship, and that stagnant, human-made sources of life will eventually destroy us.

God’s Heart for Reunion: Despite the impending judgment—which Fr. Bryant acknowledges as real and serious—he stresses that God’s ultimate desire is reconciliation. God sounds the alarm through the prophet because He loves His people and wants to woo them back to Himself.

The Deeper Question: The challenge for the congregation is to move beyond asking "What sins do I need to stop?" to the more profound question: "Where am I looking for life apart from God?"

The sermon concludes by preparing the congregation to approach the communion table, emphasizing that God tears down false idols in his mercy so that he can restore us to the true source of life.
